Creatively Aging

Gardening, a creative way

Posted in art, creativity by creativeaging on March 31, 2009

Came up to Washington DC yesterday to attend the National Center on Creative Aging’s sure-to-be-exciting conference. Arriving the day before allows some part of Washington’s own creative scene to be enjoyed. On a spring day made my way to the U.S. Botanic Garden, always a refreshing spot. One of the many areas to be savored was a collection of photographs entitled Places for the Spirit: Traditional African Americans Gardens of the South. Vaughn Sills has done us all a wonderful favor by sharing these creative and traditional gardens. This is creativity in one of its most important forms: yes it is something new and something that has value but it is also created purposefully by someone for themselves.

Opportunity Extraordinaire

Posted in aging, Alzheimer's Disease, creative aging, creativity, dementia by creativeaging on March 27, 2009

Once in a while an opportunity come around that appears it might refresh the spirit and inspire the heart as well as educate the mind. For me this is The MetLife Foundation Creativity Matters: A Health and Wellness Symposium, Creating Programs for People with Dementia and Their Caregivers. And after a great deal of thought and a bit of last minute planning I’ll be there, for most of it.

It’s the work

Recently I attended a meeting in which the presenter said (and I paraphrase) the best thing is to keep the work, the purpose, in the center of everything you do. It was one of thoseĀ ”ah-ha” moment…I work hard to keep creativity and aging at the center of what I do…yet maybe I do that to the exclusion of reflecting and sharing it. Maybe returning to this blog after such a period of silence can bring me back to a better balance. Because balance is best.
